Miele builds its dishwashers to last around 20 years, and plenty of them do. Whether yours reaches that age in a Murrieta kitchen depends less on luck than on a handful of habits, most of which take a few minutes a month. The local water is the main reason those habits matter: the Rancho California and Western Municipal water districts supply water at roughly 140 to 180 ppm hardness, and scale is the most common thing standing between a Miele and its full service life.
This guide covers what keeps a Miele dishwasher healthy, which jobs you can do yourself, and what our technician Ryan Weber checks on an annual service visit. Your owner's manual is the final word for your model, so where a setting or procedure differs, follow the manual.
Why Miele dishwashers reach 20+ year service life
Miele designs its laundry and dishwashers for roughly 20 years of normal household use, which is longer than most mainstream dishwashers are expected to last. Several design choices support that: stainless steel wash cabinets, a built-in water softener on many models, heavy-duty circulation pumps, and tighter manufacturing tolerances than most brands. Our Miele repair service sees G Series circulation pumps that run well past a decade before they need attention.
Design life is not guaranteed life, though. The parts that wear first on a Miele are the ones exposed to water and minerals: the water inlet valve, the softener, the heating system, the spray arms, and the seals. In our experience, households with softened water or a well-maintained built-in softener see the full 20+ years, while households running hard water without treatment more often see 12 to 15 years before major repairs pile up.
That gap is almost entirely maintenance. A Miele that is set to the correct water hardness, kept stocked with salt and rinse aid, and has its filters cleaned regularly avoids most of the problems we are called out for. When something does fail, replacement costs make repair the better choice at almost any age, which is another reason to keep the machine in good condition.
Monthly descaling with Miele-specific products
Scale control on a Miele starts with the built-in water softener rather than a bottle of cleaner. Miele's manuals state that water harder than 5 grains per gallon (gpg) must be softened, and Murrieta's 140 to 180 ppm works out to roughly 8 to 10.5 gpg. If the hardness setting is still at the factory default, the softener is not regenerating often enough for our water. Ask your water district for your current hardness figure, and where the reading fluctuates, set the machine to the higher value, as Miele advises.
The softener needs reactivation salt to regenerate. Use only coarse-grained dishwasher reactivation salt, never table salt or detergent, and refill it when the salt indicator appears. Only open the salt reservoir to refill it, because the brine that spills out can corrode the wash cabinet.
On top of that, a monthly routine keeps scale and odours in check:
- Run the Pots & Pans program empty once a month, especially if you mostly use eco or low-temperature programs. Miele's manuals recommend this to keep the wash cabinet clean and odour-free.
- If you see white scale or grease build-up, run the Clean Machine program, where your model has it, with a dishwasher cleaner, following the dosage on the packaging.
- Run a dedicated descaler one to three times a year. Miele's own guidance is to run its citric-acid descaler on an empty hot program one to three times a year, and in Murrieta we suggest the frequent end of that range.
Miele does not recommend vinegar. Stick with products made for dishwashers, and ideally Miele's own, since they are formulated for its seals and softener.
Filter cleaning and inlet screen maintenance
The filter combination in the base of the wash cabinet catches food soil before it can reach the circulation pump and spray arms. Miele recommends cleaning it at least once a month, and many models remind you with a Check filters message after a set number of programs.
To clean it, turn the dishwasher off, remove the lower spray arm and lift out the filter combination, taking care not to let loose debris fall into the sump. Pull the microfilter away from the filter combination, rinse all the parts under running water, and use a soft brush for stubborn residue. Reassemble, make sure the filter lies flat, and lock the lower spray arm back in place. Never run a program without the filters or the lower spray arm installed, because debris can then reach the pump.
While you are there, check the spray arms. Miele suggests inspecting them roughly every 2 to 4 months, since food particles and scale can block the jets. Remove each arm, rinse it under running water, and clear blocked jets with a toothpick. In Murrieta, scale in the jets is a common reason a dishwasher stops cleaning well.
The water inlet filter is a small screen where the inlet hose connects to the water supply valve. It stops grit and scale flakes from entering the inlet valve, and when it clogs the dishwasher may show a water inlet fault or fill slowly. Cleaning it means shutting off the water and disconnecting the hose, and on many built-in installations reaching the connection means pulling the dishwasher out. Many homeowners prefer to leave it for the annual service, and we check it on every Miele visit.
Rinse aid and detergent dispenser care
Miele dishwashers dry by condensation rather than by baking dishes with a heating element, and rinse aid is what makes that work. It helps water sheet off dishes instead of beading, which improves drying and reduces the spotting hard water causes. Running out of rinse aid is one of the most common reasons for "my Miele stopped drying" calls.
Refill the rinse aid reservoir when the refill indicator appears, and do not wait long: on many models the indicator leaves only a few cycles of supply. Fill only to the marked level, wipe up spills so they do not foam in the next cycle, and never put detergent in the rinse aid reservoir, which damages it.
If you see streaks or a sticky film, the rinse aid dosage is probably too high. If you see water spots or poor drying, it is probably too low. The dosage is adjustable in the settings menu on most models.
For detergent, use products made for domestic dishwashers only, never liquid dish soap. If your machine has AutoDos, detergent is dosed automatically from the PowerDisk, so you only need to replace the disk when prompted. On manual-dose models, wipe the detergent compartment and lid seal occasionally so the lid opens freely. If you use all-in-one tablets, keep the salt topped up anyway, because tablets do not replace the softener in water as hard as ours.
Annual professional service checklist
Once a year, a professional service catches the wear that monthly care cannot reach. On an annual Miele visit, Ryan works through the following:
- Confirms the water hardness setting matches your current supply and checks that the softener is actually regenerating.
- Cleans and inspects the water inlet filter and checks the inlet valve for scale or slow fill.
- Inspects the inlet hose and drain hose for wear, kinks, or leaks. Miele recommends checking the inlet hose regularly after installation.
- Removes and inspects the spray arms and bearings, clearing scale from the jets.
- Checks the circulation pump and drain pump for noise, debris, or early signs of wear.
- Checks heating performance and wash temperatures against what the program should reach.
- Inspects the door seal, door springs, and hinges, and checks the base for any sign of a leak.
- Reads stored fault history with Miele service tools to catch intermittent problems early.
The service uses authorised Miele parts only, because aftermarket parts do not match Miele's tolerances. Standard Miele parts typically take 3 to 7 business days, so the visit is also a chance to order wear parts before they fail. Standard component repairs such as inlet valves and sensors typically run $250 to $500, and the diagnostic is $89, waived if you proceed with a repair. Every repair carries our 90-day parts and labour warranty, with an optional 1-year upgrade for an extra fee. For any dishwasher brand, our dishwasher repair page explains common faults and pricing in more detail.
