Thermador's Star burner is one of the more recognisable pieces of engineering in a Murrieta kitchen, and it is also one of the more misunderstood when something goes wrong. A burner that clicks without lighting, a flame that disappears on simmer, or a burner that lights unevenly can each point to a simple cleaning job or to a failed electrical component, and the fix costs very different amounts depending on which it is.
This guide covers how the Star burner works, what our technician Ryan Weber most often finds, where homeowner cleaning helps, and what parts and pricing look like for Thermador range repair in Murrieta. One rule comes first: if you smell gas, turn the burners off, shut off the gas supply if you can do so safely, leave the house, and call SoCalGas at 800-427-2200. Do not flip switches or look for the leak yourself.
Understanding Thermador's Star burner design
Most gas burners are round. Thermador's patented Star burner has five points, and that shape is the whole idea. According to Thermador's own description of the Star burner, the star geometry gives a perimeter 56 percent longer than a round burner of the same size, which leaves room for more flame ports and spreads the flame further toward the edge of the pan. The practical result is a smaller cold spot in the middle and more even heat across large pans.
That design matters for troubleshooting. More flame ports means more small openings that boil-overs, grease, or cleaning residue can block, which shows up as a gap or uneven flame on one or two points of the star. The burner cap also has to sit exactly right on the burner base. Because the cap is shaped, not round, it can look seated while being slightly rotated or tilted, which disturbs the flame pattern and can keep the igniter from lighting the gas cleanly.
The Star burner is a sealed burner: the base is fixed to the cooktop and the gas valve, orifice, wiring, and spark module sit underneath. Some models add ExtraLow simmer capability to some or all burners, so note your model number before you call.
Igniter and thermocouple failures
Ignition problems are the most common Star burner complaint we see, and they fall into two patterns.
The first pattern is a burner that clicks but does not light. Each burner has a ceramic igniter next to the burner base, and a shared spark module sends high-voltage pulses to the igniters when a knob is turned to light. If the spark is not reaching the gas, the usual causes are moisture after a spill or cleaning, grease or food residue on the igniter tip, a cracked ceramic insulator, a cap that is not seated correctly, or a failing spark module. A burner that clicks after a boil-over often recovers once it dries out completely.
The second pattern is continuous clicking, where one or more igniters keep sparking with the burner lit or with all knobs off. On Thermador sealed burners this is often a reignition issue rather than a simple igniter fault. Many Thermador gas rangetops use automatic reignition: the system senses flame through the igniter circuit and sparks again if the flame goes out. Moisture in a knob switch, a failing switch, a dirty igniter that no longer senses flame properly, or a failing spark module can all make the system think the flame is out when it is not.
Homeowners often describe a burner that lights but will not stay lit as a "thermocouple problem." On older and simpler gas appliances a thermocouple is the safety device that proves a flame is present. On most current Thermador sealed-burner rangetops, that job is handled by the electronic flame-sensing and reignition system, so the diagnosis focuses on the igniter, its wiring, the knob switch, and the spark module. Whichever system your model uses, the symptom is a safety function doing its job, and the fix is a component replacement rather than an adjustment.
Our diagnostic checks spark at each igniter, the ceramics, the switches, and the module output, so we replace the part that has actually failed.
ExtraLow regulator issues on simmer function
ExtraLow is Thermador's very-low simmer system, and it generates a lot of "my burner is broken" calls. Thermador states that ExtraLow cycles the burner on and off to hold a very low temperature, which is how it keeps delicate sauces warm without scorching. That means a burner on the lowest ExtraLow settings that goes out, waits, and relights on its own is working as designed. If that is what you are seeing, there is nothing to repair.
A genuine ExtraLow fault looks different. Common symptoms include a burner that works normally on high but goes out on low and does not relight, a burner that will not turn down any further when you move into the ExtraLow range, a burner that cycles erratically or stays on full flame when set low, or an ExtraLow burner that will not light at any setting.
On many Thermador models, the ExtraLow burners are controlled separately from the standard burners. The knob position is read by a sensor rather than a simple switch, and an electronic control cycles gas through a dedicated valve to produce the on-off simmer. Our brand page calls this the low-flame regulator, and that is the right way to think about it: a separate control path that only matters at low settings. A failure anywhere in that path, from the knob sensor to the control to the valve, produces flame-out or poor control at low settings while high flame still works.
None of these components are homeowner repairs: they control gas flow. If an ExtraLow burner fails at low settings but behaves on high, stop using its low settings and book a diagnostic.
When DIY cleaning solves it vs when it doesn't
Plenty of Star burner problems really are solved with a careful cleaning. Before you touch anything, turn every knob off, let the cooktop cool fully, and disconnect power to the range at the plug or breaker. Shutting off the gas supply valve behind the range as well is the safer approach if you can reach it.
With power and gas off, you can safely:
- Lift off the burner caps and wash them in warm soapy water, then dry them completely.
- Clear the flame ports on the burner base with a soft brush or a straightened paper clip, without enlarging or scratching the openings.
- Wipe the igniter tips with a dry cloth or a soft toothbrush to remove grease and residue.
- Let everything dry fully, ideally overnight after a heavy cleaning, and reseat each cap so it sits flat and aligned with its base.
If the burner lights cleanly with an even blue flame on all five points after that, the problem was residue or moisture.
Cleaning does not fix a cracked igniter, a spark module that no longer sparks, a burner that will not stay lit after cleaning, any ExtraLow fault, or a yellow, lifting, or noisy flame across several burners, which can indicate a gas pressure or orifice issue. Do not adjust gas valves, regulators, or orifices, and do not remove the cooktop to get at the wiring. Those are jobs for a technician with the right tools to test gas pressure and confirm there are no leaks afterwards.
Factory parts sourcing and typical repair pricing
Thermador is owned by BSH Home Appliances, the Bosch group company, and we source Thermador parts through the BSH distributor network, the same channel that supplies Bosch parts. We use authorised Thermador parts on Star burner components rather than aftermarket substitutes, because igniters, modules, and valves are matched to the burner and control system. Standard components typically arrive in 3 to 5 business days, and less common parts sometimes take 5 to 10 business days.
For pricing, the diagnostic is $89 and is waived if you go ahead with the repair. Standard Thermador component repairs, which covers igniters, spark and reignition components, and ExtraLow controls, typically run $250 to $500 including parts and labour. Control boards and more involved electronics run $400 to $800. You receive a flat-rate written quote before any work begins, and every repair carries our 90-day parts and labour warranty, with an optional upgrade to 1 year on premium brand repairs for an extra fee.
For context, a complete Thermador Pro Grand range replacement runs $9,000 to $15,000, which is why repair is almost always the better choice on a Thermador range under 15 years old.
If your Star burner is clicking, flaming out, or misbehaving on ExtraLow, call (951) 592-3670 or book through our contact page. Calls received before 11 am usually get same-day service in Murrieta, and Temecula is covered for premium brand calls. Have the model number ready and we will tell you what to expect before Ryan arrives.
